If you’ve never been here before and you like quaint little towns, you are going to love White Bear Lake. You sort of run into into while you’re driving along Highway 61. It’s been around for a long time. In fact in 1874, Mark Twain included White Bear Lake in his book, Life on the Mississippi. And, in 1881 the American Travelers Journal, described White Bear Lake, as one of the most popular resorts in the magic northland! The lake itself is the second largest in the Twin Cities area. Sadly it has lost a quarter of its water volume in the last decade.
The town is very walkable and filled with boutiques, quaint little stores and plenty of places to eat. Check out Lake Country Booksellers on Washington Square. It’s got an old fashioned vibe and is brimming with books, new and used. I loved the store, Bamboo Switch. They sell many household items made from bamboo so you can make the switch from polluting plastics. A must visit is Sweet Life Lane, a candy store and Grandma’s Bakery. You won’t leave empty handed at either place!
There is no shortage of places to eat. We tried Washington Square Bar and Grill. It was a cold blustery day but this eatery was packed. It was a mix of American and Mexican fare. No complaints. So, my favorite place on my visit was the 617 Cocktail Bar. It opened in 1934, right after the end of prohibition. I don’t think the decor has changed since then but don’t get me wrong it was pristine. Bring cash, they don’t take credit cards. The bartender made a great lemon drop martini!
I lived in the Twin Cities over thirty years before I discovered this little gem of a town. It was well worth the visit. I believe they also have a great farmers market. Let me know what you think and your recommendations.
